Overview

Founded in Havana, Cuba, in April 1945, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the principal organization enabling cooperation among the world’s airlines.
IATA’s work supports safe, reliable, secure and economical air services for the benefit of passengers, shippers and the global economy.
The association develops global commercial standards, recommended practices, and policies that streamline airline operations, reduce costs, and improve safety and customer experience.

At its founding in 1945, IATA had 57 airline members representing 31 nations, primarily in Europe and North America.
Over the decades the international scheduled air transport industry has grown more than 100-fold. Much of this growth has been supported by the standardization, procedures and technical work coordinated by IATA.
Today IATA has roughly 260 member airlines from 117 nations, representing carriers of every size and region across the globe.

Safety and Operational Standards: IATA develops technical and operational standards that help airlines and airports maintain high safety levels, improve on-time performance, and standardize procedures across borders.
Financial Settlement Systems: IATA operates financial clearing and settlement services that simplify billing and payments among airlines, travel agents and other industry participants (e.g., IATA Billing and Settlement Plan – BSP; Cargo Account Settlement Systems – CASS).
Training and Professional Development: IATA provides training programs and certifications for aviation professionals covering safety, operations, cargo, dangerous goods, security, and other specialized topics.
Advocacy and Policy: IATA represents airline interests at international forums, governments and regulatory agencies, advocating for favorable policy, infrastructure investment, and harmonized regulations.
Environmental and Sustainability Work: IATA develops industry-level strategies to reduce aviation’s environmental impact, including carbon reduction targets, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) promotion, and operational efficiency measures.
Safety Audits and Accreditation: Programs such as IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) set global audit standards for airline operational management and control systems.
