About this Course​

Improve your supervisory abilities and earn recognition for your skills, knowledge, experience and commitment to professionalism by earning the Certified Hospitality Supervisor certification.

The CHS designation gives you industry recognition for your supervisor skills. Recognized worldwide, the CHS designation is the industry’s highest acknowledgment of professionalism for supervisors in the hospitality industry.

Prerequisites

Qualifying Position

Qualifying supervisor—a person who supervises two or more individuals; has job duties that are at least 20 percent supervisory in nature and which include such tasks as scheduling, training, interviewing, discipline, inspecting and conducting performance reviews; makes decisions and judgment calls while performing daily duties; and has input on hiring and firing decisions within a department.

Time in Position

3 months:

  • Supervisor, Manager, Department Head, or Executive Certification eliminates time requirement
  • Degree from an accredited academic institution or Completion of SSB eliminates time requirement

Preparation

Candidates may choose to complete the Supervisory Skill Builders series in preparation for the CHS Exam.

How to Obtain Certification

  • Purchase your application, study guide, and exam package
  • Complete and submit your application and supporting documents
  • Upon approval, access resource materials
  • Connect with a proctor to complete your exam

How to Apply

You will be required to complete an application to ensure you meet the prerequisites. Provide correct documentation and required references. Have these documents available for upload:

    • Current Resume
    • Job Description
    • Copy of diploma or transcripts
    • Any previous AHLEI certification certificates

Enrollment period

Exam will be accessible for 1 year from date of application approval.

Proctor Required: Yes
Number of Examinations: 1
Number of Questions per Course: 200
Time Allowed per Course: 240 minutes
Passing Score: 70%
Retake Limit: 2 retake purchases allowed (within 1 year from date of application approval)

Finding a Proctor

COTHM will arrange a proctor and register for a proctored exam session before you can take the exam.

Awarding Body

Upon successful completion, the candidate will be awarded with:

  • Certification by American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute.
